Reynolds River track is a 44km high clearance 4wd track and was one of my favourite from my travels through Northern Territory! Rugged terrain, plenty of river crossings, and stunning waterfalls. Here’s a list of things to know before you take on the track:
Is Reynolds 4wd track open?
This track is only open during the winter dry season. And if you plan to visit in the early dry season, a snorkel is highly recommended as the crossings can be quite high. I completed this track in early July, and some of the crossings were up to 600mm of water depth. Check if the track is open here: https://nt.gov.au/parks/find-a-park/litchfield-national-park/reynolds-track
Reynolds 4wd track difficulty.
Again, this really depends on the time of year you are there. During the early dry season, when the track first opens, will be when the water depth is at its highest, so the crossings will be a lot more difficult to navigate. Aside from the crossings, the track is quite easy to navigate. It does get quite muddy in spots during the early dry season so make sure to bring recovery gear.
Air your tyres down.
Make sure you air your tyres down before driving this track. It gets quite rocky in areas, especially through the creek beds.
Check river crossing depths before you go.
This one seems like a no brainer, but these river crossings aren’t very practical to just ‘walk’ and check. The crossings can be up to 100m to the other side. Average depths of the crossings are listed on the NT government website, otherwise they are also written and updated on the information board at the start of the track.
